As for our room - all in all it was very comfortable and quiet. The mini bar was stocked with soft drinks, beer, water, and even multiple full size liquor bottles - which all came at the typical higher price you usually encounter at hotels. Lastly, I appreciated the extra security my room key offered as every night the front doors of the hotel would lock at around 10pm and ultimately the only access to the hotel was offered by your own key card. A clear testament to Charlotte’s growing and innovative beer scene. — The Queen City is about to say "guten tag" to one of the oldest breweries in Germany as they make Charlotte their first brewery outside of the country. In addition to the brewery, Charlotte is home to Gilde’s U.S. headquarters, which oversees Gilde’s distribution across the country. Gilde has been working on opening a Charlotte location since 2018 but experienced delays due to the pandemic and resulting supply chain issues. This is a good german restaurant and the beer is very decent. Also all the apps look great although we only ordered the smoked fish toast thing.

″If the Russians penetrate the front lines, if there is a Ukrainian request -- which is not the case today -- we should legitimately ask ourselves the question″ of sending troops, Macron was quoted as saying. In France, President Emmanuel Macron reiterated in an interview published Thursday that he doesn’t exclude sending troops to Ukraine. Ukrainian soldiers withdrew from Avdiivka, a city in the Donetsk region, in February under a withering Russian barrage that had sapped their fighting strength and morale. Since then, the Kremlin’s forces have used their military might to take village after village in the area, bludgeoning them into submission, as they look to capture the parts of Donetsk they don’t already occupy.

475-Year-Old German Brewer Selects Charlotte for First US Bier Haus - WCCB Charlotte

Most were intercepted in Bryansk, where five were brought down, it said. The governors of three Russian regions reported that energy facilities were damaged by Ukrainian drone strikes overnight. Oryol region Gov. Andrei Klychkov said energy infrastructure was hit in two communities. The Smolensk and Kursk governors reported one facility damaged in each region.

Our founder, Cord Broyhan, started it all in 1546 in Hannover, Germany, and today we continue his legacy by serving up the best German cuisine and bier in town. The new brewery will open along Dewitt Lane, in Charlotte's Lower South End community. The Embassy at Gilde Brewery will occupy 9,000 square feet to seat 350 guests in both an interior bier haus and outdoor bier garten. Leading the charge as brewmaster will be renowned German brewer Willi Wallstab, who will relocate to Charlotte in the summer of 2021. Gilde assembled a team from Germany and relocated team members to Charlotte to lead the beer and culinary operations. Willi Wallstab, a renowned German brewing master, serves as Brewmaster of Gilde Brewery.

Dominik Kuehne, a rising culinary star in Germany who worked with two Michelin star chef Stefan Herrmann prior to relocating to Charlotte, serves as executive chef. The culinary offerings include both unexpected and well-known German foods. Additionally, Gilde’s beers are currently in stock at a variety of stores and markets across the Charlotte metro area. Authentic German Brewing, now in Charlotte North Carolina.

Other breweries began to copy Broyhan’s recipe, leading Gilde to distinguish their bottles with a “Broyhan Taler,” a rooster, the traditional currency used in Hannover, Germany at the time. To honor Broyhan, Gilde continues to mark each can and bottle of beer produced with the same rooster symbol used in the 1500s. 476 years later, Gilde still brews using only the ingredients allowed by the German Purity Law enacted in 1516–barley, hops and water. “We are excited to become a part of Charlotte’s thriving beer community and to bring our authentic German beer and cuisine to the Queen City–and the U.S.,” says Mike Gaertner, president of Gilde. CHARLOTTE – German beermaker Gilde will open its first brewery outside of Germany in Charlotte, N.C.

I am more of a liquor drinker, but I tried three different beers and loved them all. The food here is high quality and delicious. If you haven't been here yet you need to give it a try... Not busy on a Thursday evening but made the first visit even better. The food was good, loved the bratwurst and sauerkraut, plus glad not to have to rely on a food truck.

The only comment is that they charge $3 for a mustard sampler if you want mustard with your food. The smooth is like Grey Poupon and the grain tasted like regular mustard. The other one is a sweet type which was not my favorite. Gilde says they have a 474-year history in Hannover, founded in 1526. Original founder Cord Broyhan took a lighter, well-hopped approach to beer that varied from dark, heavy beers traditionally produced in Germany beforehand.

Aside from the service tunnels, there are also abandoned subway and equestrian tunnels from the days before personal vehicles began clogging up LA’s city streets. There are stories of these tunnels being used by police to transport prisoners, bank security to move large sums of cash safely, and both coroners and mobsters to store bodies. Now they are mostly closed off, but some are still accessible and are used as film locations, easy shortcuts by city employees between buildings, and a place for runners to train on the rare occasion of bad weather. Nash was allegedly involved in the quadruple Wonderland Murders in 1981; the suspected motive was as a retaliation for the robbery of Nash's home perpetrated two days earlier by three to five men. A key player in the incident, adult film performer John C. Holmes, was later acquitted of the murders.[10]Nash and Holmes were well acquainted with each other; Nash enjoyed introducing his countless houseguests to Holmes, who was infamous for playing the X-rated movie character "Johnny Wadd." Despite prohibition laws, 11 miles of service tunnels became passageways to basement speakeasies with innocuous fronts above ground.

The key to the room, most likely for the outside lock, was seen in "Smile for the Ed" when Eddy's mother offered him the chance to move into the room if he takes a good school picture for the year. His room is only seen in "O-Ed Eleven" and Ed, Edd n Eddy's Big Picture Show.

It was seen again in Ed, Edd n Eddy's Jingle Jingle Jangle where Eddy searched the attic for his parent's Christmas present stash which was hidden under the floor boards. Its last appearance was in "May I have this Ed?" where the Eds tried to teach Edd how to dance and talk to girls by having him practice on a mannequin in the attic.

They were championed by the governor and signed into law after they passed. Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham announced a special legislative session in July to address possible public safety measures in New Mexico, read a news release from her press office. Nearly 19% of Eddy County’s deaths were a mixture of prescribed and illegal drugs from 2010 through 2014, read the study. Concerns over crime, drug abuse and homelessness were some topics addressed by candidates running for public office during a forum presented by the Eddy County Chapter of the NAACP.

House set a single-game Arizona State record with a 61-point effort in a 111–108 double-overtime victory against the California Golden Bears on the road in his senior season. The point total tied Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Pac-10 single game record and was the highest total for the 1999–2000 NCAA Division I men's basketball season.[2] It also was a memorable homecoming of sorts for him, as he had starred in high school for nearby Hayward High School. House also set a record in the game with 18 made free throws in 19 attempts. House is the first Pac-10 player to notch four 40-point games in one season as he had 61 vs. Cal, 46 vs. San Diego State, 42 vs. Penn State and 40 vs. UCLA.

He was selected by the Miami Heat in the second round (47th overall) of the 2000 NBA draft. He played in Miami for three seasons before leaving for the Los Angeles Clippers in free agency. After just one year in Los Angeles, House was traded to the Charlotte Bobcats.

The goal of the Eddy House is to bring sustainable independence to the youth they are helping, some fleeing abusive households, others aging out of the foster care system, many at risk of becoming or remaining unhoused.

To explore the former highway of the LA underground, you must slip behind the Hall of Records on Temple Street and locate an easy-to-miss elevator. On June 30, 2011, House exercised an option clause in his contract, agreeing to a one-year, $1.4 million extension with the Heat.[13] On Christmas Eve, he was waived by the Heat without playing a game for them during the 2011–2012 season. On April 13, 2011, vs the Toronto Raptors, House scored a career high 35 points, beating his career NBA record by four points. The Heat made the 2011 NBA Finals and were defeated by the Dallas Mavericks in six games. Game 6 of that Finals series ended up being House's final NBA game ever.

The Heat lost Game 6 95–105 and House recorded 9 points, 3 rebounds, 1 assist and 1 steal. In previous interviews, several former employees spoke to Our Town Reno anonymously about difficult youths to deal with, from racist, hateful language to fights and safety concerns at check-in during late hours when there are fewer employees around. The 2024 United States House of Representatives elections in Oregon will be held on November 5, 2024, to elect the 6 U.S. representatives from the State of Oregon, one from each of the state's congressional districts. Compared to the den, the living room is furnished with green flooring though it's noticeably lacking in actual furniture save for a rug, a potted plant, and a framed picture of a beach. The living room contains the landing for the stairwell that leads to the second floor as well as cased openings that lead to the kitchen and hallways. In "Over Your Ed," it was shown to have a large walk-in closet called the "Closet of Dreams." Curiously, while it contains a multitude of clothes, Eddy is only seen wearing his normal clothes, the clothes that his parents just bought him, and his coat. Eddy's closet may have access to hammerspace, as his closet looks very long, yet his house doesn't have a long piece that matches the length of the closet.

He also posted eight 30-point games that same season and set ASU records in points (736) and points per game (23.0). Also led the team in assists (111) and steals (74), as the 74 steals is tied for second on ASU single-season list. He is one of only three players to average in double figures in four consecutive seasons at Arizona State since it joined the Pac-10.

The reason why it's Eddy's personal bathroom is because the only way to enter it is through a door in Eddy's room. An exception is in "X Marks the Ed," where it's on the second floor, suggesting it's a general bathroom for the house, also supported by it holding many of his parents' healthcare products in that same episode. Separated from the living room by a hallway, the den is lined with wooden flooring and contains much more suitable furnishing than the living room such as a couch, shelving cabinet, end table, lamp, and a stereo system. The den is also directly connected to Eddy's bedroom via a door in the corner (though this is contradicted in later episodes where the door is shown to lead directly into his personal bathroom).

“They don't have a lot of money … So it's people like me, it's people who can't deal with these like, violent situations or people with mental health problems,” she said of having worked part-time at the Eddy House while still a student at UNR. Compared to the sprawling Cares Campus shelter on Threlkel St., the Eddy House, for the age group, on a corner of Willow Street is much cleaner inside, with more activities available, built-in resources and a more positive buzz. During the 2024 Legislative Session, House Bill (HB) 129 established a seven-day waiting period for gun buyers and Senate Bill (SB) 5 banned firearms at polling sites.

Its website indicates that in 2021, it served 374 youths with over 12-thousand bed nights and 11-thousand meals.

He also is the career record-holder at Arizona State for field goals and steals, and set the single-season scoring average record for the school with 23.0 points per game in 1999–2000. During that season he was named Pac-10 Player of the Week a record-tying four times (matched only by Ed O'Bannon, Chris Mills, Gary Payton, and Quincy Pondexter). Eddy's personal bathroom was first seen at the beginning of "Over Your Ed" and then made appearances in "X Marks the Ed," "A Twist of Ed," and "Cleanliness Is Next to Edness." It's just like a regular bathroom, except it has a shower stall instead of a bathtub.

He said private citizens, government officials, law enforcement and businesses working together would help. On September 6 or 7, 1984, Nash's former lover Maureen Bautista and her son Telesforo were stabbed to death by Hells Angels biker Robert Frederick Garceau.[15]Garceau was turned in to the police after he murdered Greg Rambo, who had helped him dispose of the Bautistas' bodies. Rambo's wife, Susan, knew of the Bautista murders and talked to the police under an agreement of immunity.

Eddy's house is briefly seen in Ed, Edd n Eddy's Boo Haw Haw near the end. Only his front door area is seen, decorated with a jack-o-lantern, two faux tombstones, and a stereotypical iconic image of a witch's head mounted on the door.

Eddy has a white and pink, retro-styled room that also has a door that leads to his backyard. For sleeping, he has a king-sized circular bed with a box of tissues on top of the headboard. Below it is a moderate food and drink supply designed to act as a 'bunker' in case of emergency. The dresser is later seen, in "To Sir with Ed," moved inside Eddy's closet.

Photos & Fun Facts About Abandoned California Theme Parks

Today it’s The Pike at Rainbow Harbor shopping complex, which does have a ferris wheel. Every once in a while, they’ll take a few years to replace old favorites with new lands to feature new brands (Harry Potter or Cars or Star Wars). But once upon a time, from the early days of the city until as late as the 1970s and ’80s, Los Angeles was home to dozens of more freewheeling amusement parks.

Japanese Village and Deer Park

#5 – Wonderland Amusement Park (San Diego) — The first amusement park in San Diego and one of earliest California theme parks, Wonderland was a a tiny wonder at just 8 acres. Yet, the park offered dozens of diversions for its visitors, including the largest roller coaster on the West Coast at the time, a carousel, dance hall, bowling alley, and a menagerie of animals large and small. Here are the lost locations of 18 of LA’s most spectacular lost amusement parks. The original Busch Gardens opened in 1906 in Pasadena, on land surrounding the Busch family’s mansion, but it was actually just gardens. The first Busch Gardens theme park opened in Tampa in the 1950s; the one adjacent to Anheuser-Busch’s brewery in Van Nuys opened in 1966, with a monorail, boat rides, lagoons, thousands of rare birds, and free beer.

Voters stating no party preference account for more than a fifth of the electorate. Venice Lake Park opened in 1950 with rides for little kids, like the Little Dipper rollercoaster, a miniature railroad, and a Zeppelin ride. The next year, William Boyd, aka movie cowboy Hopalong Cassidy, became a partner and the park was rebranded as Hoppyland, with lots of space dedicated to pony rides. Apparently Boyd appeared at the park regularly to tell kids to eat their vegetables and mind their manners.

Growing up in South Africa bred a man of conviction, strength and compassion with, above all, a deep love for all humanity.

Fraser's Million Dollar Pier

And yes, it's as pleasant as you'd imagine to sit on The Bush Farmhouse's mostly open-air back porch or outdoor picnic tables and gaze out over the grounds and gardens, sip wine and eat massive prawns straight from the grill. Henegan had already inherited the chickens and roosters from his landlord, the former owner of Roots and Fruits, who moved out of state. Henegan's reputation as an animal rescuer grew, and soon he had adopted Meg and Jane, the mini donkeys, and Petals and Paddles, the white Pekin ducks that roam the property.

BEER IS LOVE

A meticulous reproduction of the Banbury Cross Old Mill was later constructed and became an iconic landmark for the popular Pasadena park. Barnes sold off some of his land to people who wanted to build homes and once they’d built those homes, they weren’t so crazy about the roar of lions and chattering of monkeys. After a complicated Culver City incorporation battle, Barnes moved the park to Baldwin Park in 1927. The pier burned down in 1920 but was rebuilt and reopened with many of the same attractions in 1921. It continued to grow until 1946, when the city’s recreation and parks department refused to renew the lease. As part of his ambitious Venice of America development, Abbot Kinney commissioned a pleasure pier at the end of Windward Avenue.

Henegan sources other produce from the Black Mountain Tailgate Market, but expects the restaurant to ultimately be self-sustaining between what's grown onsite and on the nearby riverside land of Falcon Construction owner David Ross, also Henegan's business partner. The chef said he doesn't miss cooking inside at all, and customers delight in the smell of the grill on the restaurant's third of an acre, he said. From that grill, Henegan turns out a host of rotating proteins including whole branzino, Hickory Nut Gap T-bones and porterhouse steaks. The bobotie is described as curried meatloaf with demi-glace, saffron rice and yellow raisins.

Murphy Ranch

Some things come out cold, some dishes you don’t even see, but in the end, you didn’t hate it. Henegan’s new concept could be described as a romantic vision - South African dishes flow from an outside kitchen comprised mainly of a grill and griddle, beverages are mixed to order at a covered bar while patrons are enjoying the garden and farm animal views. Over a glass of Graham Beck Brut RosĂ©, the South African wine with which Nelson Mandela toasted his release from prison and also enjoyed with the Obamas when they visited South Africa, Mark talks about the ethos of The Bush Farmhouse.

As of 1990, it was abandoned and in a state of disrepair, and covered in graffiti.[2] The site is currently owned by the city of Los Angeles. In early 2016, many of the ranch buildings were demolished, as they were deemed unsafe. A few buildings remain, including the power house, an all-concrete building that once contained the diesel generators.

The land itself was leased from the Beverly Oil Company, and came with a giant oil well, which Bradley disguised as a dragon. When Marineland of the Pacific opened in 1954 on a cliff at the edge of the Palos Verdes Peninsula, it was the world's biggest oceanarium, with two huge tanks circled by exterior ramps winding up three levels (plus rooftop viewing). Apparently this was all very expensive to keep up, let alone keep updating; attendance dropped through the early ’60s and POP finally closed in 1967.

The park became Hanna-Barbera's Marineland in the late ’70s, then sold to SeaWorld in 1987. They shipped various animals off to their park in San Diego and closed Marineland down. There used to be a 35-acre amusement park in Historic South-Central, just south of Downtown LA. It began in 1887 as Washington Gardens, which hosted weekly variety shows, displayed various animals and a panorama of the Battle of Gettysburg, and eventually included an ostrich farm, according to the Downtown News.

Mark’s a seasoned chef, with a long and storied career from Il Buco in New York City, to the opening of his restaurant Madiba in Brooklyn in 1999, and then another Madiba opening in Harlem in 2014. He moved back to NC in the 2000s and split his time between here and New York. When Mark adopted Candy the Pig, the restaurant’s mascot, he was told she was a “miniature teacup pig.” She must weigh more than 200 pounds now. Ducks and chickens provide eggs, but the animals generally live a life of leisure—one that reflects the experience intended for human visitors to The Bush. With the closure of the Los Angeles Anheuser-Busch promotional facility and bird sanctuary in 1979, the era of the original Busch Gardens tourist attractions officially came to an end on the West Coast. The incredible horticultural heritage of the Busch Gardens Pasadena park carried into the lush landscape of the Busch Gardens parks in Tampa and Williamsburg.

Calvert has a history of voting against LGBTQ+ rights, as The Times has previously reported, but said during the 2022 campaign that his views had since evolved. That record will almost certainly come under fire in the Coachella Valley as he faces off against Rollins, a gay man who lives with his partner in Palm Springs. The rematch between Republican Rep. Ken Calvert and Democrat Will Rollins is one of several 2024 California races that will help determine which party controls the House. The Riverside County seat also became slightly more favorable to Democrats in the last round of redistricting, with the addition of Palm Springs and Rancho Mirage on its eastern edge. This is yet another rematch from 2022, with Democratic former federal prosecutor Will Rollins once again hoping to unseat Rep. Ken Calvert (R-Corona), the longest-serving member of California’s congressional delegation.

Issues regarding water — including water access for agriculture, as well as water quality and water availability in wells — will also be crucial, along with healthcare access issues, said Thomas Holyoke, a professor of political science at Fresno State University. The district has a slight Latino majority, with white voters also accounting for nearly 40% of the electorate, according to data from California Target Book. It includes cities like Madera, Ceres and Merced and portions of Modesto and Turlock, as well as rural swaths of the San Joaquin Valley. Democrats and Republicans are virtually tied in registration numbers, with Republicans recently taking on a several thousand-voter advantage, as of early April.

Calvert — who has represented parts of the Inland Empire for more than three decades — narrowly staved off Rollins last cycle in a race that was far more competitive than expected. This time, Rollins will be aided by the full backing of the Democratic Party and far more fundraising support. The fact that Tran is the son of Vietnamese immigrants and has a Vietnamese surname could help him build name recognition but won’t be determinative, DeSipio said.

It wasn't much, just a riding ring and a bunch of ponies, but it benefited from its neighbor's popularity. It outlasted BP by a few years before shuttering to make way for the Beverly Center. Once a fairground and baseball field, Beverly Park opened in 1943, but really came into its own in 1945, when it sold to a man named David Bradley.

Fraser’s Million Dollar Pier was rebuilt once again in 1925 as the Ocean Park Pier (this time in fireproof concrete), opening with an Egyptian Ballroom, an aerial swing, a rollercoaster, a fun house, and more. It was expanded in 1929 with “the highest amusement chute and the only one ever built on a pier,” according to Westland, plus a ferris wheel and an Aero Glider. While the briefly popular Ocean Beach neighborhood landmark is long gone, Wonderland remains a vibrant part of San Diego’s history and is honored today in the historical theme of the city’s aptly named Wonderland restaurant and pub.

Visitors could watch the alligators devour live chickens and wrestle with humans, buy alligator skin products in the gift shop, or ride a saddled alligator. In 1958, Ocean Park’s amusement pier joined the space age, emerging as Pacific Ocean Park, designed by Fred Harpman, who’d designed parts of Disneyland’s Main Street and would go on to art direct Deliverance. POP included some of the old buildings and some fantastic new ones, like a starfish entryway canopy. There was also Infant Incubators, where premature babies could get free medical care from trained nurses. Fraser rebuilt and the pier was expanded with new attractions over the next several years as it passed to new owners.

Six California House races that could help determine control of Congress

Valadao regained his seat in 2020 and was one of 10 House Republicans to vote for Trump’s impeachment after the Jan. 6 insurrection. Once a safely ruby-red Republican domain, California’s 22nd Congressional District is in a part of the San Joaquin Valley that has grown increasingly purple in recent years, with Democrats now holding the registration advantage. “I think Tran has much more of an uphill battle to be able to get his issues and his name into voters’ minds,” DeSipio said. That will be compounded by two things, said UC Irvine political science professor Louis DeSipio. Steel has a massive fundraising advantage, with more than $3 million on hand compared to Tran’s nearly $200,000. Baugh also has some vulnerabilities, including a political misconduct case he faced in the 1990s that resulted in a $47,900 fine.

Chutes Park

The problematic-sounding Japanese Village and Deer Park was opened in 1967 by a man named Allen Parkinson, who developed Sleep-Eze. The 29-acre park was inspired by a trip to Japan’s Nara Deer Park and featured exotic deer, a somersaulting bear, a tiger, a rollerskating macaw, a Japanese teahouse, a poker-playing koi fish, and “an overwhelmingly Asian staff,” according to KCET. It sold in 1910 and reopened in 1911 as Luna Park, with a new Nemo’s Trip to Slumberland attraction, which ran 600 feet along Main Street. That didn't take either, and the site sold in 1912 to a group who wanted to make it into a park for African-Americans; that plan never got off the ground. As we canceled the appetizers that never arrived and paid the check, I decided to view dinner at Bush Farmhouse like going to a party at someone’s house. The host will be out back manning the grill, tables are pieced haphazardly to accommodate the crowd, but the sun’s out, the kids are playing, the roosters are crowing and most are smiling.

A farmworker’s son and a dairy farmer battle to represent the Central Valley in Congress

The park was trimmed back to only its birds in 1977 and finally closed in 1979 (the birds were distributed to various zoos and other theme parks, but descendants of some are said to still fly the Valley skies). # 4 – Pacific Ocean Park (Santa Monica) — This 28-acre nautically themed amusement park opened in 1958 as a direct competitor of Disneyland in nearby Anaheim. The park, which featured a large pier, many rides, a sea circus with performing animals, and snack bars, was an instant hit with locals and tourists — but that was to be short lived. Al Barnes first opened his circus in the 1910s near the Venice Lagoon, but locals weren’t crazy about having a circus in town, so he moved in 1920 to a 120-acre former ranch site in what is now the western end of Culver City. After changing hands a few times, the park sold in 1956 to a couple of 20th Century Fox executives, who renamed it Jungleland; by then there were lions, tigers, hippos, and orangutans, and famous animals including Mr. Ed and Leo the MGM lion.

During the 2022 cycle, Porter hammered Baugh on those campaign violations, as well as his antiabortion stance. That rough primary also put Min at a financial disadvantage going into November. He and Baugh have both raised around $2.3 million, but as of the last campaign finance filing period, Min had a little more than $400,000 left in his war chest, whereas Baugh had $1.9 million.

Henegan's restaurant is built into a 1912 farmhouse, and he said he did not want to disturb the building by adding a hood system to the all-electric indoor kitchen, so any cooking that would require ventilation happens on an outdoor grill and flattop. The farmhouse used to be owned by a woman named Grandma Lindsay and had a couple of other iterations before it became The Bush—including as Roots and Fruits Market and the Full Moon CafĂ©. “I walked down the street and I saw it was closing and I was like, this is meant to be,” says owner Mark Henegan.

Durban style curry or bunny chow can also be found on the menu as well as bobotie. The night we went was beautiful, late in October with temperatures still in the 70s. However, plenty of staff wandered the premises, giving the impression that service would be fast. Mark Henegan, the chef and owner, hails from South Africa, spending most of his life in kitchens. Asheville knows Henegan from The Asheville Public or TAP, formerly in the River Arts District.

But there were also several other California theme parks that shuttered their doors over the past decades. The closure of both Busch Gardens Pasadena and Busch Gardens Los Angeles left Southern California with 2 fewer amusement parks. While there haven’t been any Busch Gardens California theme parks since the 1970s, there is SeaWorld in San Diego, which is operated by the same company that also owns Busch Gardens in Tampa and Williamsburg. I’m not only a Busch Gardens historian, but I’m also a theme park enthusiast, and I enjoy sharing my knowledge of old theme parks with others. The older of the 2 operating Busch Gardens theme parks opened in Tampa in 1959. Today, Busch Gardens theme parks are major draws in Florida and Virginia — but they’re no longer found in the West.

Housed in the old Roots and Fruits Market in Black Mountain, the new owner took over the space, rescuing the animals that lived outside the market and café while at it. The park closed in 1967 and was demolished by 1975 following fires and other vandalism. Only a few pier pilings from the attraction remain today, but evidence of the park exists on surviving film of several TV programs that were shot there, including The Man From U.N.C.L.E., The Invaders, and Get Smart. The park closed in 1977 and today the site of the former theme park, once located at 6122 Knott Ave, is now a business center. As in the 13th District to the north, economic issues and inflation will likely be top of mind for these voters.

In 1977, the park was formally converted to a promotional facility for Anheuser-Busch — with much of the property dedicated to serving strictly as a bird sanctuary. A second Busch Gardens park, this one boasting a tropical theme, opened in Van Nuys in 1964 — a decade after the adjacent Anheuser-Busch brewery came online. Meanwhile, the Busch Gardens property was sold off in parcels to developers — with many retaining original elements of the park. Some of the Busch Gardens property was sold to developers, but Lilly kept much of the attraction open by granting use of the property to the Pasadena Hospital Association in 1920. The park was open 7 days a week during this period, and a massive team of more than 50 gardeners maintained the lush attraction.
