And yes, it's as pleasant as you'd imagine to sit on The Bush Farmhouse's mostly open-air back porch or outdoor picnic tables and gaze out over the grounds and gardens, sip wine and eat massive prawns straight from the grill. Henegan had already inherited the chickens and roosters from his landlord, the former owner of Roots and Fruits, who moved out of state. Henegan's reputation as an animal rescuer grew, and soon he had adopted Meg and Jane, the mini donkeys, and Petals and Paddles, the white Pekin ducks that roam the property.

A meticulous reproduction of the Banbury Cross Old Mill was later constructed and became an iconic landmark for the popular Pasadena park. Barnes sold off some of his land to people who wanted to build homes and once they’d built those homes, they weren’t so crazy about the roar of lions and chattering of monkeys. After a complicated Culver City incorporation battle, Barnes moved the park to Baldwin Park in 1927. The pier burned down in 1920 but was rebuilt and reopened with many of the same attractions in 1921. It continued to grow until 1946, when the city’s recreation and parks department refused to renew the lease. As part of his ambitious Venice of America development, Abbot Kinney commissioned a pleasure pier at the end of Windward Avenue.
Henegan sources other produce from the Black Mountain Tailgate Market, but expects the restaurant to ultimately be self-sustaining between what's grown onsite and on the nearby riverside land of Falcon Construction owner David Ross, also Henegan's business partner. The chef said he doesn't miss cooking inside at all, and customers delight in the smell of the grill on the restaurant's third of an acre, he said. From that grill, Henegan turns out a host of rotating proteins including whole branzino, Hickory Nut Gap T-bones and porterhouse steaks. The bobotie is described as curried meatloaf with demi-glace, saffron rice and yellow raisins.

The park became Hanna-Barbera's Marineland in the late ’70s, then sold to SeaWorld in 1987. They shipped various animals off to their park in San Diego and closed Marineland down. There used to be a 35-acre amusement park in Historic South-Central, just south of Downtown LA. It began in 1887 as Washington Gardens, which hosted weekly variety shows, displayed various animals and a panorama of the Battle of Gettysburg, and eventually included an ostrich farm, according to the Downtown News.
Mark’s a seasoned chef, with a long and storied career from Il Buco in New York City, to the opening of his restaurant Madiba in Brooklyn in 1999, and then another Madiba opening in Harlem in 2014. In 1958, Ocean Park’s amusement pier joined the space age, emerging as Pacific Ocean Park, designed by Fred Harpman, who’d designed parts of Disneyland’s Main Street and would go on to art direct Deliverance. POP included some of the old buildings and some fantastic new ones, like a starfish entryway canopy. There was also Infant Incubators, where premature babies could get free medical care from trained nurses. Fraser rebuilt and the pier was expanded with new attractions over the next several years as it passed to new owners.

The 29-acre park was inspired by a trip to Japan’s Nara Deer Park and featured exotic deer, a somersaulting bear, a tiger, a rollerskating macaw, a Japanese teahouse, a poker-playing koi fish, and “an overwhelmingly Asian staff,” according to KCET. It sold in 1910 and reopened in 1911 as Luna Park, with a new Nemo’s Trip to Slumberland attraction, which ran 600 feet along Main Street. That didn't take either, and the site sold in 1912 to a group who wanted to make it into a park for African-Americans; that plan never got off the ground. As we canceled the appetizers that never arrived and paid the check, I decided to view dinner at Bush Farmhouse like going to a party at someone’s house. The host will be out back manning the grill, tables are pieced haphazardly to accommodate the crowd, but the sun’s out, the kids are playing, the roosters are crowing and most are smiling.

Al Barnes first opened his circus in the 1910s near the Venice Lagoon, but locals weren’t crazy about having a circus in town, so he moved in 1920 to a 120-acre former ranch site in what is now the western end of Culver City. After changing hands a few times, the park sold in 1956 to a couple of 20th Century Fox executives, who renamed it Jungleland; by then there were lions, tigers, hippos, and orangutans, and famous animals including Mr. Ed and Leo the MGM lion.

But there were also several other California theme parks that shuttered their doors over the past decades. The closure of both Busch Gardens Pasadena and Busch Gardens Los Angeles left Southern California with 2 fewer amusement parks. While there haven’t been any Busch Gardens California theme parks since the 1970s, there is SeaWorld in San Diego, which is operated by the same company that also owns Busch Gardens in Tampa and Williamsburg. I’m not only a Busch Gardens historian, but I’m also a theme park enthusiast, and I enjoy sharing my knowledge of old theme parks with others. The older of the 2 operating Busch Gardens theme parks opened in Tampa in 1959. Today, Busch Gardens theme parks are major draws in Florida and Virginia — but they’re no longer found in the West.
Housed in the old Roots and Fruits Market in Black Mountain, the new owner took over the space, rescuing the animals that lived outside the market and café while at it. The park closed in 1967 and was demolished by 1975 following fires and other vandalism. Only a few pier pilings from the attraction remain today, but evidence of the park exists on surviving film of several TV programs that were shot there, including The Man From U.N.C.L.E., The Invaders, and Get Smart. The park closed in 1977 and today the site of the former theme park, once located at 6122 Knott Ave, is now a business center. This year’s featured acts include Architects of Air, out of Nottingham, UK, an immersive walk-through experience that invites visitors to a world apart from the normal and everyday through labyrinthian tunnels and cavernous domes of saturated color accompanied by a gentle sensory soundscape. When Blumenthal was shut down in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, it received a Shuttered Venue Operators Grant (SVOG) from the federal government. Much of that funding went toward the launch of the festival, with the aim of getting people back to work. With SVOG, Blumenthal was able to put more than half a million dollars toward the creative talent behind the festival, from projection artists to theatrical storytellers, dancers, technicians, and more.

After a particularly long, brutally hot summer in Charlotte, the seasons are once again beginning to change, coaxing residents out of their air-conditioned bunkers to enjoy cooler temperatures, and Charlotte's array of annual fall festivals. Levine Avenue of the Arts will also see the return of free performances on the Levine Stage and the Festival Biergarten, featuring food and drinks, including Blumenthal’s signature beer, Brush Stroke, developed in partnership with Heist Brewery. The Biergarten will be open Mondays–Thursdays from 3 pm–10 pm, Fridays from 3 pm–11 pm, Saturdays from 11 am to 11 pm, and Sundays from 11 am–9 pm.

Jain is one of nine local artists selected as a 2023 Blumenthal Fellow and awarded grants for their work by Blumenthal Performing Arts (BPA), the festival’s organizer and producer. BPA awarded $85,000 to this year’s fellows as part of its mission for the festival to bring together local and global artists in a cultural celebration.

The show is inspired by astronauts who have seen Earth from space and features live music, dance and satellite imagery.
